13-year-old Vera Howard from Aleppo, Syria, developed the Smart Skewer Robot—an innovative earthquake rescue project. The robot, powered by LEGO Mindstorms EV3, integrates real-time audio and video cameras to identify people trapped under rubble, classifying them based on body part presence. Machine learning, utilizing 3000 images from Dimension dataset, enables the robot to distinguish human from non-human body parts. The face detection extension identifies human faces. IFTTT sends an email to the rescuer team after detection for communication. PictoBlox programs and controls the robot with key commands. In real-life earthquake testing, the robot successfully rescued trapped individuals.
