Soil Doctor – Helping Farmers Choose Crops in a Changing Environment

Aditi Bhut, a talented 10-year-old from Ahmedabad, India, has created an incredible project called the Soil Doctor. This project aims to assist farmers in choosing the most suitable crops for the changing environmental conditions. The Soil Doctor consists of two models, each offering unique functionalities.

Model 1 of the Soil Doctor uses pH and humidity sensors and servo motors to provide valuable soil insights and adjust pH levels for optimal crop selection. This system equips farmers with the necessary data to make informed decisions about crop selection.

Model 2, the Soil Doctor focuses on optimizing the irrigation process. It integrates a moisture sensor that closely monitors the moisture levels in the soil. When irrigation is needed, the moisture sensor triggers a program that activates a pump to deliver water to the soil. Once the moisture level reaches the desired threshold, the pump automatically stops, ensuring efficient and controlled irrigation. The Soil Doctor’s Model 2 eliminates the need for manual intervention in the irrigation process, reducing farmers’ workload while promoting optimal water usage.

Recognized as a winner in the 2020 Codeavour competition, the Soil Doctor uses PictoBlox, and the capabilities of extensions such as Weather Data, Text to Speech, and Actuators – evive & Arduino.
