SafeCross: Assistive Solution for Visually Impaired Pedestrians

The student-initiated project – Smart Traffic Light for Visually-Impaired Individuals was created to enhance road safety and assist visually-impaired individuals while crossing roads. This innovative solution utilizes Quarky, Pictoblox, and Google’s Teachable Machine’s pose-detection feature. It detects if a visually impaired person is crossing the road. The system then provides them with a signal on whether to proceed or wait, putting the emphasis on inclusivity in transportation.

The project makes use of a number of Pictoblox’s libraries such as Display (Quarky), Control, and Python blocks. When a visually impaired person is crossing the road, Quarky uses it to control a 7×5 RGB LED display. The Object Detection block and its corresponding Python block utilize AI to identify and locate objects from images. Real-time demonstrations of the code attest to its efficacy, as the system is able to detect when a person is crossing the road and when they are not.

The project aims to reduce the stereotypes and risks for visually impaired people when crossing roads. It also enhances overall road safety and promotes inclusivity in transportation.
